How much is too much to pay for a smartphone? Prices have climbed globally—IDC forecasts a nearly 30 percent rise this year alone amid ongoing memory supply crunches—but would you pay $1,600 for a Motorola?
That kind of money typically buys a folding phone with a bendable screen—where steep manufacturing costs justify the markup—or a maxed-out “candy bar” slab from an established premium brand like Apple or Samsung with gobs of internal storage. Motorola hasn't pushed into this price bracket outside of its latest Razr Fold or Razr Ultra folding devices, but that's changing with the new Motorola Signature 27.
It marks Motorola’s first unapologetic, ultra-premium candy bar in the US in six years, harking back to the Edge+ from 2020. And this time, rather than settling into the comfortable value-flagship tier, Motorola is taking direct aim at the highest-end Galaxies and iPhones on hardware alone. Preorders open on November 19, and the phone goes on sale November 26.

So what exactly do you get for $1,600? The Signature 27 has contoured edges, a thin design, and an “integrated” camera plane—similar to the iPhone 18 Pro’s Camera Plateau—finished in ceramic and brushed aluminum. It comes in two colors: Pantone Capulet Olive with a textile-inspired finish and Pantone Coal Smoke with a tactical-weave finish. The front glass is Corning's Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, and the phone has an IP68/69 rating for top-of-the-line dust and water resistance.

Most notable is the 6.8-inch screen. Motorola claims its “Extreme AMOLED Duo” panel is the brightest smartphone display on the market, peaking at an eye-searing 12,000 nits. Underneath, it uses tandem OLED tech—stacking two panels on top of each other—similar to what Apple debuted on its iPad Pro and touchscreen MacBook.
Even so, Apple's new display peaks at around 2,000 nits, and most smartphones today top out around 3,600 nits, which is more than enough nits to read the screen in harsh sunlight. Chinese phone brands like Honor and Huawei have recently touted 10,000-plus max nits of brightness, but those ratings rarely apply outside of tiny slivers of the display during HDR playback. Treat Moto’s brightness statement as pure spec-sheet marketing.
The tech does deliver better energy efficiency, meaning the display uses less power and could improve battery life, plus a 121 percent longer lifespan than normal AMOLED panels. The screen also has a 1.5K resolution, Dolby Vision support, and “Pantone Validated” color calibration for accurate colors.
Once a handicap, the company's camera tech has become more competitive in recent years, and Motorola hopes the Signature 27 will stand out with its top-end image sensors. There's a 50-megapixel Sony Lytia L910 main camera—Sony's first sensor with LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology, which can dramatically improve dynamic range in a single exposure. Basically, it should perform better in challenging lighting conditions, with fewer crushed blacks and blown-out skies.
Next up is a 200-megapixel periscope 3X telephoto camera with up to 100X digital zoom, enhanced with generative AI, similar to what Google and Samsung offer on their respective devices. Rounding things out is a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 50-megapixel selfie camera with 4K video support. Speaking of video, Motorola says its new video enhancement engine uses AI to optimize color, contrast, and dynamic range, and improved stabilization should make footage look smoother.
But wait, isn't there a fourth camera on the back? No, that's actually a dedicated “Event-Based Vision Sensor” (EVS), which Motorola claims is a first on a smartphone. It works with Motorola's Action Shot mode, freezing motion so photos of moving subjects look perfectly crisp and sharp with no motion blur.
The Signature 27 is among the first phones to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, announced in September, the top-end processor you can expect to see in most flagship Android smartphones in 2027. Motorola cites better cooling performance with a 40 percent larger thermal chamber to keep the processor running longer. It comes with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
It's one of the first phones with Wi-Fi 8. (Yes, you'll need a Wi-Fi 8 router to take advantage, and those barely exist on the market right now.)

A massive 7,000-mAh silicon-carbon battery sits inside—relatively new technology that enables denser yet slim batteries. That size should get you around 66 hours of battery life—more than two days. It supports 90-watt TurboPower fast charging—the company claims 12 minutes of charging will get you 12 hours of use—and wireless charging (but still no Qi2 magnetic wireless charging).
To help justify that $1,600 price, Motorola is partnering with premium audio brand Bang & Olufsen for the phone's speaker system, with a new speaker architecture promising the kind of “deep bass” and “clear vocals” every phone maker claims in their latest and greatest.
On software, Motorola promises 7 years of software updates. Motorola has historically lagged in updates, but it is changing its tune with higher-priced devices like the Razr Fold and now the Signature 27. This is also Motorola's first smartphone to support GrapheneOS—a de-Googled version of Android that focuses on protecting your privacy. (You can just stick with stock Android if you want.)
The Signature also gets a few Gemini Intelligence features that Google introduced this year with Android 17. You can ask Gemini to tackle tasks on your behalf, like booking an Uber or ordering food through DoorDash; create widgets using generative AI; and translate American Sign Language into English in real time with Google's Gboard and Live Transcribe apps. Google is also lending Motorola its Rambler feature that until now was exclusive to the Pixel 11. Rambler dramatically improves speech-to-text dictation.
Lifestyle Chops
Will all of that be enough to convince someone to part with $1,600? Motorola's Nicole Hagen, head of global product marketing, thinks so. She tells WIRED that Motorola has positioned itself as a lifestyle company for the last few years by leaning into luxury partnerships with brands like Pantone and Swarovski and pushing into the premium tier.
She points out that revenue is up 15 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2026, with a third of that coming from the “premium” category. She also says that the Signature model launched outside the US earlier this year alongside the Razr Fold saw the highest net promoter scores in the company's history, suggesting greater customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.
“Historically for Motorola, higher pricing has been tied to the foldable form factor, but we wanted to offer that set of consumers seeking the highest-quality smartphone where no technical specification has been overlooked,” Hagen says. And if the price is off-putting? Hagen points to Motorola's entire portfolio, from the budget and midrange Moto G series to the upper-midrange Motorola Edge phones.
Nabila Popal, senior research director at research and consulting firm IDC, isn't convinced that Motorola can successfully command such high prices. In the US, Apple captured 80 percent of the premium smartphone market in the second quarter of 2026, with Samsung sitting at 16 percent. Lenovo, Motorola's parent company, had just one percent.
“The average consumer—even the premium consumer—is not seeing which phone wins on a spec sheet,” Popal says. “Regardless of how great this phone is, it's going to be quite hard for Motorola to compete.”
Still, Motorola has seen success in this bracket. Its pricey folding phones are the most popular in the US, leading with 78 percent of the folding market. (Apple is expected to dramatically chip away at Motorola's lead with the new iPhone Duo.)
Motorola’s new handset does fall in line with the current “premiumization” trend in the hardware industry, though, where devices get a glow-up so companies can charge higher prices and preserve profitability in the memory-crisis era. Amazon's slate of October announcements is a good example—its new tablets, Echo devices, and Kindles all have higher starting prices but are made with nicer materials and more powerful components.
If the premiumization playbook works, Motorola will have proved that luxury doesn't have to bend. But it’s an uphill climb in this economic climate—especially when $500 can still buy you a fantastic phone.
