the best hybrid mattress is sort of like cake. There's always going to be a couple of key ingredients—in the case of a mattress, that's springs and foam. Those two main elements are layered up and combined with an almost endless assortment of other ingredients (latex, coils, foam layers of various densities, assorted fabrics). The art is in the details of the recipe, and mattress brands carefully combine each ingredient in specific ratios to create a comfortable bed.
Hybrid mattresses are what we recommend for most people because when they're done right, they're soft yet supportive and much more breathable than an all-foam mattress. The only way to pick the best is to sleep on all of them, which is why I—and other WIRED reviewers—spend a week or more sleeping on each mattress, taking careful notes and then comparing them with teammates' experiences, if they have also tested that particular model. Very rarely does one mattress work for everybody, so this is especially crucial to find options tailored to your height, weight, sleeping position, and overall mattress wish list (for example, a cooling cover may be nonnegotiable for you).
We have tested all sorts of mattresses, from those focused on side sleepers, helping with back pain, organic options, and even what we deem the best mattresses overall.
Updated April 2026: I've added the Tiami Luxury Hybrid and Saatva HD mattresses to our product lineup for this article. I've also ensured prices were up to date throughout.

Leesa
WIRED director and reviewer Martin Cizmar really, really, really likes the Leesa Sapira Chill. It's been on our list of the best mattresses for a long time due to its comfortable hybrid construction. It features a temperature-regulating cover (which Cizmar reports effectively absorbs excess heat), a quilted pillow top that gently sinks in, four types of memory foam, and pocketed coils.
Each memory foam layer is designed to be breathable while also serving its own purpose in terms of pressure relief and support. The topmost quilted layer and comfort layer are thicker and softer for a deeper sink, while the bottom responsive and transitional layers are designed for enhanced support. The pocketed coil core also provides enhanced support where it's needed most, specifically in the lumbar zone. Coils are arranged in zones, so you get a firmer feel around your midsection. This helped alleviate Martin's back pain during testing. Plus, reinforced coils along the edge help with durability and edge support.

Nolah
We're all familiar with Goldilocks (and how often that's used in mattress reviews—sorry, stick with me here) and her plight of trying to find a bed with the right firmness. That's not too far off from the average side sleeper's mattress experience. Finding the “just right” balance means getting something soft enough for your hips and shoulders to press into the bed without causing irritation. While doing that, it also has to be not too soft, because spine alignment is so important. With that in mind, the Nolah Evolution rises to the task—probably because it was developed for side sleepers.
It just so happens that this is the mattress I sleep on when I'm not testing. I especially appreciate that the quilted foam and four foam layers underneath excel in pressure relief—I love feeling cocooned in my bed. Two layers in particular stand out: the AirFoam Luxe layer that's meant to keep firm lumbar support in place, and the TriZone Foam, which also adds a firm foam layer. If that weren't enough, zoned coils are present. Like the Sapira Chill, the firmest coils are right in the center. Back pain? Not in my house.

The Bear Elite Hybrid offers three firmness levels to choose from: standard soft, medium, and firm. However, if there's one thing that testers with back pain on our team believe in, it's the power of a firm mattress for support. Two WIRED reviewers have tested this mattress: Martin Cizmar and Nena Farrell. Both regularly deal with back pain, and they found that the firm Bear Elite Hybrid model really did the trick for lumbar support. They note that while it feels quite firm at first, the mattress feels more and more welcoming as time goes on.
The mattress cover uses phase change material, which sucks up heat and makes it feel cool to the touch. If you have incredibly awful back pain, though, you may want to consider the upcharge Celliant cover, an infrared-infused fabric. We haven't tried it, but it supposedly helps with recovery. You've also got copper-infused foam for even more cooling, plus transition foam for pressure relief purposes. Surprise, surprise, there's also zoned pocketed coils, so those coils located in the middle are doing the heavy lifting.

Hybrid mattresses aren't always just memory foam and coil pairings. While that does make up a good majority of the market (as far as I've seen), some people simply don't want that. Enter: natural, organic materials. In hybrid mattress mode, they're effective options that make them good contenders even if you weren't looking for something within this category. A prime example of this would be the Birch Luxe Natural.
According to WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson, the mix of organic wool, GOLS-certified latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton, and pocketed coils was a winning combination for responsive support. There's a lot to celebrate about latex, like its hypoallergenic status and natural heat resistance. The Luxe's pillow top added that cherry-on-top bit of luxury to sink into, while the rest of the mattress did plenty to help with spinal support.

Wolf
I always empathize with couples attempting to mattress shop, because it's a tall order trying to find a suitable bed for two of everything: body types, sleeping positions, temperature preferences, and pain points. The Wolf Memory Foam Hybrid Premium Firm is a well-rounded, supportive hybrid mattress for couples (and their extracurriculars, if you catch my drift).
Its cooling cover does an outstanding job of staying cool-feeling, with a gel foam layer underneath that provides extra support. Four more layers of memory foam are present for pressure relief, which, from experience, it more than delivers on. You then have your pocketed coils in the middle, which lift heavier areas with firmer-feeling support. Overall, I thought it was more medium-firm, 6.5 out of 10, which is doable for all kinds of sleepers regardless of their build or sleeping position.

Bedgear
Shout-out to all of my hot sleepers out there: At the end of the day, we want to cool off. Many mattresses claim to be cooling, but Bedgear's H Series takes the hybrid cake, according to WIRED reviewer Molly Higgins. From top to bottom, this was a mattress made with cooling in mind. There are two versions, the H4 (medium-firm) and the H6 (medium-plush). Either way, you're looking at some superb cooling.
The cooling cover on this mattress uses a proprietary material called Ver-Tex, which felt silky and noticeably cool to the touch during Molly's testing. This cover's not doing all the work, though, as there are Air-X side panels that Molly describes as “meshlike” and are meant for air circulation. The memory foam layers on top are your best friend when it comes to pressure relief, and the pocketed coil core is contained within a foam perimeter for added edge support.

DreamCloud
Most of the time, when I encounter a hybrid, it involves some variation of memory foam and coils. Many brands put their own twist on foam—and coils, for that matter—so it's often switched up for a unique mattress experience. Sometimes that experience is good, and other times, not so good. But if there were ever a hybrid mattress that nailed this balance, it's the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid.
DreamCloud expertly put together pressure-relieving foams, pocketed coils, and a temperature-regulating cover to create its Classic Hybrid. It's got a quilted surface, not a pillow top, but it still delivers on the pressure relief front. The medium-firm feel really supports stomach and back sleepers, but I've never had any complaints while sleeping on my side.

Thuma
Thuma offers its mattresses in Plush, Medium, and Firm—I tested it in Medium, which was much firmer than I expected. I loved the support around my lumbar zone and the whole-body lift it provided. Firm mattresses can be helpful for all sorts of sleepers, like couples, combination sleepers, those with back pain, heavy-bodied sleepers, and anyone who needs to maintain spinal alignment. If you’re looking for the best mattress for sex, the Thuma Hybrid delivers on this front as well, as its dense, five-layer construction makes for easy movement, strong edge support, and less sink.
I also appreciated the materials that went into this mattress. There’s a Tencel cover for softness and light cooling, along with organic wool, CertiPur-US-certified memory foam, organic Dunlop latex, and recycled steel pocketed coils. Just like the brand’s bed frames, there’s a strong emphasis on natural, sustainable materials to deliver a high-quality mattress. The latex and coils stand out in particular, as they contribute a lot to this bed’s firm feel. Dunlop-method latex refers to a production process that makes latex firmer, and pocketed coils provide targeted support.

Avocado
The Avocado Green mattress is one of the most highly certified organic mattresses we’ve come across. It has 13—mainly for the latex it uses. The latex is Global Organic Latex Standard certified, for one, and there’s also GreenGuard Gold, EWG, Made Safe, and Global Organic Textile Standard certifications. All of these mean you’re getting genuine, environmentally friendly materials in your mattress. There are three variations of the Avocado Green to choose from: Plush, Medium, and Firm. The Medium version has an extra 2 inches of Dunlop latex in a pillow top; the Plush has 3 inches of Talalay (a latex made to feel slightly softer) in a pillow top. If you go either of these routes for increased cushioning, know they cost a bit extra.
WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson tested this latex mattress for two years and has a few takeaways to share with the class. He tested the Firm version, which features Dunlop latex and recycled steel pocketed coils as its core components. Both the latex and coils contour lightly around your body, but where there is heavier weight, they supply firmer support. Being a firmer mattress that helps with lower back support already qualifies the Avocado Green as a good option for back and stomach sleepers. However, Gilbertson noted that the latex also performs well at maintaining its coolness and providing pressure relief. He said that while this bed wasn’t winning any awards for preventing motion transfer (latex is very bouncy, to the point where his kids took the liberty of impromptu mattress/trampoline park sessions), it didn't sag—a common issue with latex mattresses over time. If you’re looking to skip synthetics in favor of a more natural way to sleep, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Tiami
The necessity of a firmer mattress for stomach sleeping can feel like a double-edged sword: your spine gets the support it needs, but pressure relief for your hips isn’t a priority. The Tiami Luxury Hybrid provided me with both. Tiami incorporates innovative materials into its hybrid construction—particularly Energex foam, which is meant to mimic latex. This is incorporated into foam layers and foam-capped pocketed coils.
The foam layers are ventilated to help keep you from overheating and to provide the light, sink-in feeling for your hip bones—a treat seldom experienced with this sleep style. Each coil’s foam capsule is also intrinsic for this. The firmness of the metal coil, paired with the foam atop it, provides a gentle lift around your lumbar region to keep it aligned. I found the weight distribution of the Tiami to be on point, preventing the lower back from sinking in too far while not being overly rigid to the point of discomfort. These materials also let me move around easily, as softer foams can cause more sink and inhibit that.

Saatva
For heavier body types, hybrid mattresses are the ideal place to start in your mattress research. Beds that use only foam or latex often don’t provide enough lift for this body type. Lack of support causes sleepers to sink too far into their mattress, leading to spinal misalignment, reduced pressure relief, and general discomfort. Over time, this takes a toll on your sleep. The Saatva HD not only pulls together three types of mattress materials—foam, latex, and coils—but also incorporates design details to ensure you’re not missing out on the support you’ve been looking for.
The Saatva HD is 15.5 inches tall, which helps prevent sleepers from sinking in too deeply. Saatva incorporates extra lumbar support via a special “wire” in the center of the bed, keeping your midsection aloft to support healthy spinal alignment. To assist with this, 14-gauge coils keep the surface responsive, meaning it is easy to move around on and feel supported at all times. The foams and latex in the Euro pillow top and upper layers relieve pressure along joints, but aren’t soft enough to detract from the mattress's supportive feel. Each side of the HD can support up to 500 pounds, yet doesn’t feel overly firm for co-sleepers of different sizes.

What Is a Hybrid Mattress?
A hybrid mattress combines two or more mattress materials so that sleepers can leverage the top-performing aspects of both. This is helpful if you are in between mattress types, such as memory foam or innerspring, and don’t want to fully commit to just one. You can get pressure relief from latex, memory foam, or both; innerspring coils amp up the support.
What Kind of Hybrid Mattresses Are There?
There are many combinations that hybrid mattresses can feature. Usually, it’s foam on top and coils underneath for support, but there’s a lot of variance within these two material categories. For example, foam can mean memory foam, polyfoam, proprietary foam like Nolah’s AirFoam, or even combinations of these types. Latex hybrids can involve the various types of latex (Dunlop, Talalay, latex foam) atop coils. As for coils, hybrid mattresses more often than not use pocketed coils over traditional ones. Individually wrapped coils, or pocketed coils, are independent and help with increased motion isolation, pressure relief, and zoned support. That doesn’t mean traditional coils are obsolete in the world of hybrid mattresses, though. The Saatva Classic is the premier example of a contemporary mattress using both traditional and modern coils. Pocketed coils at the top are better for adapting around a sleeper’s body, while the bottom layer of traditional coils promotes durability. This bottom layer is also responsible for not only supporting all the layers atop it, but also increasing airflow within the mattress.
Who Is a Hybrid Mattress Best For?
Virtually every kind of sleeper can find a hybrid that works for them, mainly since there is so much variety on the market. Whether you’re looking for specific materials for your new mattress or something built especially for your sleep position, there are plenty of options available to you. Out of all the mattresses out there, hybrids are the ones we test most regularly and that you will see in our guides. If you want to find out which we consider the best of the best, head over to our best mattresses of 2025 guide to learn more.
How We Test Mattresses
We know how anxiety-producing it is to make a decision sight-unseen as to what you may end up spending 10 years sleeping on. To that end, we spend a week or more testing these mattresses in our own homes, sleeping on them, relaxing on them, and just overall using them as a consumer would, to get insight on comfort, support, materials, and any other details that pop up. To give us some concrete data (since we're not exactly conscious during testing), sleep trackers keep tags on our progress.
How Does WIRED Acquire Mattresses to Test?
All mattresses chosen for this guide were either samples provided by the manufacturer, with no obligation for coverage or promises for what coverage could look like, or purchased by WIRED and expensed.
What Does WIRED Do With the Mattresses After Testing Them?
Once testing is complete, the mattresses are donated locally within the tester's geographic region.
