Canal & River Trust is celebrating 10 years of Green Flag Awards, with 758 miles of waterways across England and Wales now recognised by Keep Britain Tidy for their quality, management and value to local communities.
The milestone comes a decade after the Macclesfield Canal became the Trust’s first waterway to receive Green Flag status in 2016. This year, a further 19½-mile stretch of the Rochdale Canal, including the route through central Manchester, has been added to the list.
Chief executive Campbell Robb said: “For 10 years, Green Flag Awards have helped showcase the important contribution canals make to communities across England and Wales.”
The Green Flag Award scheme recognises well-managed parks and green spaces, with the Trust saying the awards highlight the role canals play in supporting recreation, active travel, wildlife and community wellbeing.
