Refilling of Toddbrook Reservoir at Whaley Bridge is now underway as Canal & River Trust enters the final stages of the long-running project to restore the reservoir following the dramatic spillway collapse in 2019.
The charity says government-appointed inspectors have approved the start of refilling works after completion of the new overflow spillway, replacing the structure that partially failed during heavy rainfall almost seven years ago and led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents from the Derbyshire town.
Water from Todd Brook is now gradually being allowed back into the reservoir, with the process expected to take place over several weeks and months. Subject to sufficient rainfall, the reservoir is expected to resume its primary role of supplying water to the Macclesfield and Peak Forest canals later this summer.
The major engineering scheme has included the complete construction of a new spillway beside Whaley Bridge Memorial Park. Canal & River Trust says all redundant concrete panels from the former 1970s auxiliary spillway have now been removed.
The well-used walkway across the crest of the dam is also being reinstated, while a new bridge across the spillway is expected to reopen to the public in the autumn.
Dilwyn Parry, Toddbrook project manager for Canal & River Trust, said the start of refilling marked a significant milestone in the restoration programme.
He said: “We are extremely grateful for the continued support and patience of local residents.
“Subject to adequate rainfall, by late summer we should have reached the major milestone of returning the reservoir to its important role of supplying water to the Macclesfield and Peak Forest canals and as a vital resource for the local community.”
Work around the site is expected to continue through the summer months, including landscaping of the Memorial Park area with new shrubs, mature trees and spring bulbs. A new playground is also planned.
Site cabins and construction equipment will gradually be removed, while the football pitch is due to be returned to Whaley Bridge Athletic Football Club by the autumn. Canal & River Trust also plans to restock the reservoir with fish and begin construction of a new sailing club facility before the end of the year.
Toddbrook Reservoir remains one of the most closely watched infrastructure projects on the inland waterways network following the high-profile emergency repairs carried out in 2019.
