The Friends of the Montgomery Canal concluded with regret that after losing some key members of the organising team they have not been able to hold the Montgomery Canal Triathlon this year.
Valued offers of help were received but the Friends have not yet been able to complete a team to organise the event in September. They continue to appeal for supporters to help with the next Triathlon in 2027.
Speaking for the organisers, Christine Palin said: “The Montgomery Canal Triathlon is a most popular and successful event with a great reputation of being friendly, well-organised with really good facilities for participants. Over the years entries have come from our local area and from across Britain, sometimes from abroad too. Many come year after year – often with friends or family, sometimes several generations.
“We know that people wanted to join the event this year – there was even a waiting list! So we are keen to carry on building a team to organise the next Triathlon, hopefully in September next year.
“We are delighted that a number of volunteers have offered to help but we do still need to complete an organising team for the various preparations before the event. The systems for the Triathlon have been developed over the years and there will be extensive guidance for the new leaders. Obviously preparation can be easier if shared between a larger team so we are looking for more help in leading the event.

“This is our major event to promote the canal and the borderlands of Montgomeryshire and Shropshire – and of course to raise funds for the canal. Over the years the Triathlon has contributed many thousands of pounds to the Restore the Montgomery Canal! appeal, most recently supporting the work of the volunteers who are rewatering sections of the canal which have been derelict for eighty years.”
