It's not much is it? I mean it's good stuff in the right direction but it's small beer, it won't change much, these are minor tweaks to longstanding cost of living issues. But it's the direction of travel that's important, it's about signalling hope from the very first days of his Premiership, Sir Keir never really got that bit, he went in all downbeat and alarmist from day 1 saying it's all the previous administration's fault and things may stay tough, as it turns out that was correct, even honest, but it wasn't what the electorate wanted to hear hence Andy's serving up hope, a more optimistic vision. Obviously he'll be slaughtered for it if things don't improve but so far it's positive messaging, positive steps, we're all in this together, small upward nudges emphasising there's a new government in control, slate wiped clean looking forward. He's got three years to get the public onside, or indeed keep them onside because new leaders get a bounce so he mustn't waste it, indeed he could go further and faster, something properly radical rather than these tiny policy tweaks, and stop being obsessed by how he's going to pay for it, these are tiny giveaways in the grand scheme of things. Do more, bring more good news, give us hope that the future might not be relentlessly downhill forever even if it probably is, it's all about the message and delivery, Keir blew it, don't blow it, please don't blow it.
